About the music

This music is the result of ideas from our heart and of hard labour done these past years. We are proud to present you with a distinguished fusion of Impressionist music with Jazz, Portuguese, Brazilian and Folk music.

Impressionist music is historically the first sort of music to transcend the boundaries of countries, continents and even races, for it combines the popular music from many countries and continents. When listening to Debussy or Satie you can hear the exotic music scales from Arabia and beyond. In Brazil, Vila-Lobos paints you a rhythmic, melodic and harmonic picture influenced by Brazilian music styles such as samba, baião and frevo.

This Brazilian music is something we are quite familiar with, not only because of our Portuguese-Brazilian roots but also through our experience performing it in the Netherlands and abroad. Having lived in Portugal for many years and having strong musical and personal connections with Brazil, this has put us in a very intimate position with a wonderful fusion between two cultures; a fusion that allows us to merge it with yet another kind of music that is of high cultural and erudite standard, the Jazz.

Uniting Jazz and Folk with Impressionist music is something recent, something that only few artists have attempted; however, taking this fusion and adding the Portuguese-Brazilian relation we spoke of, is something untried so far.

Therefore, we feel that this sort of music may have a space in people’s hearts and minds. Creating this world crossover is something that will allow the audience to experience a bricolage of various cultures expressed through the Stepping Stones’ music.

Impressionist Jazz

Rhythm with is a musical process related to the body, melody is related to the human mind, and, finally, harmony is related to the heart in Classical music, melody and harmony are arguably the strongest aspects. In Pop, melody and rhythm are clearly the most prominent ones. In Jazz, rhythm and harmony play the most important parts.

The Stepping Stones Impressionist Jazz is a musical form of expression where a balance between these three aspects of music is attempted. This results in the audience being communicated a variety of impressions which stimulate the fantasy through imagination.
